Psychology in Writing: Movies That Get You Thinking
I was contacted by Kaitlyn Cole, a writer of the Career Overview Blog, about an article she thought might interest my readers. If you feel stuck in your writing career or if you're experiencing a creative block, this article might point you to a movie that will prove inspirational. Here's the article:
15 Excellent Movies for Psychology Majors
When I read it, it got me all curious about 8 1/2 (1963) directed by Frederico Fellini. Have any of you seen this movie?
I also spotted another article women writers who are also stay-at-home moms will smile about. You can access it here:

Have never seen 8 1/2 but I have seen Frederico Fellini's, Juliet of the Spirits . The script doesn't make a whole lot of sense at times , the use of colors and fantasy sequences were pretty cool.
The 5 movies that really get me thinking ( cant belive they didnt make the list ):
1 ) eXistenZ , Dir. - David Cronenberg - Merges reality with an alter-reality ; raising pseudo-intellectual questions of reality.
2 ) The Science of Sleep , Dir. - Michel Gondry - A movie about dreams .
3 ) Adaptation , Dir. - Spike Jonze - The screenplay was written by the brilliant Charlie Kaufman. A really interesting film for any writer ; though Nicolas Cage is in it.
4 )Reservoir Dogs , Dir. - Quentin Tarantino - The dialogue in this movie is amazing , all one has to do is really listen.
5)Your Friends and Neighbors , Dir. - Neil Labute - A misanthropic hate-fest about relationships that are hilarious and caustic ; and bleak. Amazing dialogue too.
Hi Charlie,
Thanks for adding these movies! I've seen Adaptation, but not the others. These sound like the kind of films that need to be watched several times to really appreciate their content. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.
Great find. I have seen some of those movies and I can say "Videodrome" and "Lars & The Real Girl" are both really good and get to your head. Let me add Brad Anderson's movies to this. Particularly "The Machinist" and "Session 9" who both look paranormal, but are explainable through psychological analysis.
Mmmm...I haven't seen any of these movies, Ben. Thanks for the mention. I will look them up. You guys have me real curious now!
My daughter was encouraged to watch The Wave for her Psychology degree. It is a fascinating look at teens and discipline.
Happy New Year.
Thanks for the suggestion, Glynis!
The article on successful women who were once SAHMs is interesting. I never knew that Nancy Pelosi was a stay at home mom before going to congress.
Hey, I am checking this blog using the phone and this appears to be kind of odd. Thought you'd wish to know. This is a great write-up nevertheless, did not mess that up.
